3. Conventions of Writing:

Formal college vocabulary without including slang and contractions.
Avoids colloquial, ethnocentric, and discriminatory language.
II. Thesis Statement/ Sentence (No full introduction) (5 points, Skill CAT1, PS1)

The thesis statement should state the names of the 3 languages/dialects that will be discussed in your paper and the focus of your paper.
III. Analysis (2 paragraphs) (25 points, Skill CAT2&3, PS2&3, HCD)
Paragraph 1: Student presents how commonly held linguistic stereotypes about Native American, African-American, and Appalachian’s speech are created and/or misunderstood by White Americans to maintain power differences.
Accurately presents the contents of all 3 readings in their own words without quotes, heavy paraphrasing, or plagiarism.
Discusses workplace, education, and film/media representations and experiences. 
Provide a relevant detailed example from each of the 3 assigned readings demonstrating language discrimination you discuss.
Paragraph 2: Student presents that presents how language is related to and important to identity.

In-text citations are Required
NO DIRECT QUOTES ALLOWED IN THE ESSAY!
However, In-text citations are ALWAYS required, even if you paraphrase or rewrite an author’s idea. You are still borrowing information you learned from reading the article/book.  You Must then cite.
The proper location for a citation is at the end of a sentence in which you first discuss the author’s work, and before the period of a sentence.
For example: African-American speech patterns are often negatively evaluated by others in workplace settings (Meyers 2020).

IV. Final Statement (2 sentences):(5 points, Skill CAT4, PS4&5, HCD)
Student should identify what they have learned from the assigned readings about linguistic and cultural diversity in 2-3 sentences.
V. Works Cited (1 separate page) (5 points, Skill COM 5)
Works Cited should be in Turabian AAA style format. 
Works Cited should be in alphabetical order by last name of the first author for each article.
If Works Cited and/or in-text citations are missing from the paper, this is considered plagiarism and could result in a 0 on the paper.
