In keeping
with the practice and profession of law, it is required that all assignments be
submitted in a professional, businesslike format, as students will be expected
to do when they are lawyers submitting documents to the court. Thus, the
following requirements apply to all assignments and exams submitted to the
school:
All
assignments, including midterm essay exams, must be submitted in Microsoft
Word, WordPerfect, or pdf text-selectable format.
All
assignments, including midterm essay exams, must be typed. Final exams may be
typed or legibly handwritten.
Use
one-inch margins and a font size of 12 points. Use Times New Roman, Arial, or a
similar businesslike font. Use black ink only on all parts of the assignment.
Single-space
all assignments and skip a line between paragraphs or headings. For assignments
other than exams, students may alternatively double-space the entire paper and
indent paragraphs.
Include a
page number on each page, at the bottom center.
Include
the following information on the first page of each assignment:
1) Name
2) Email
address
3) Date of
submission
4) Term of
studies, e.g., 1L, 2L, 3L, etc.
5)
Subject, e.g., Criminal Law, Real Property, Constitutional Law, etc.
6)
Assignment title, e.g., Definitions Assignment, Case Briefs, Midterm Essay
Exam, etc.
For
quotations from another source, use quotation marks to indicate the words are
not your own. If the quoted selection is longer than four lines, it must be set
off as a block quotation. Use proper citation on all quoted material, as shown
in The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.
Midterm essay exam answers must not exceed eight pages. The typical length for a good answer is 3½ to 6 pages. It is unlikely a paper of less than 3 pages will have sufficient coverage of the issues or sufficient argument to receive a good grade. On the other hand, it is equally unlikely that a paper of more than about 6 pages will be concise and focused enough on the proper issues to receive a good grade.
Use IRAC format, and write the essay in a narrative fashion.
Include a copy of the midterm essay exam question with your answer when it is submitted for grading.
