Our current unit is concerned with the possible benefit of difficulty as well as the academic viability of non-mainstream dialects in academic settings.
This project will allow you to practice this examination. Please select a passage or two from Macbeth. These passages should be indicative of Shakespeare’s old, metaphor-laden, iambic pentameter-based English.
You will write on a few things:
Please translate a passage of your choice into a mainstream and contemporary form of English. This may feel unnatural, reductive, debased, or otherwise. However, in translating each passage this does not mean you necessarily agree with the translation.
Please also provide a rationale—in other words, why did you modify what you did? What words, phrases, syntax had to be altered?
Please write a paragraph, detailing what you thought of the translation. Did it enhance the writer’s ability to communicate? Did it get in the way? What was the result of the translation?
