As mentioned before, your Discussion posts for the class will be in the genre of a Reading Response Journal.
Reading Response is a place for students to share their opinions, ideas, and responses to the text(s) we have read in class.
In your post, choose ONE of the topics below to respond to in at least two well-written paragraphs, totaling about 250-300 words (half a page, double-spaced).
Once you have written your response, edited and revised it, and submitted it, respond to at least ONE peer’s journal with your thoughts. Your response should work to further conversation, not to compliment. Add an example, ask a question, offer a counterpoint, or expand on what the person has said.
MODULE 1: LESSON 2 DISCUSSION TOPICS
1. Theme in “Sweat”
The theme of a literary work is its central message or insight into life. Based on your reading of “Sweat,” what do you think is one of the main themes or lessons about human nature or society that Hurston is conveying through the characters and plot? Cite specific examples from the story to support your interpretation of the theme.
2. Moral Dilemma in “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”
In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas,” Le Guin presents readers with an imagined society and then explores the moral dilemma at its core. What do you think is the central theme or message Le Guin is expressing through this story about the nature of happiness, ethics, or the moral tradeoffs societies make? Explain your interpretation using details from the story as evidence.
3. Contrast in “Sweat” or “Omelas”
Themes are often explored through contrasting characters, situations, or symbols within a story. Identify a symbolic element or contrasting aspect in either “Sweat” or “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” that you believe reinforces the story’s main underlying message or theme. Analyze how this symbolic element/contrast helps develop and communicate the theme, using examples from the text.

A clear thesis, supported with one to two quotations from the literature.
