If a firm only staffs recruits using one of the methods addressed then they are hindering the company from hiring quality employees. Whenever you have multiple ways of completing a task, if you fail to access all options you may be taking away from your process or goal. There’s internal sourcing which is seeking candidates from inside the organization currently employed. External sourcing is seeking candidates that don’t work at the organization to hire.
If the firm only does internal sourcing they would have the option to take a current employee and move them into the position that needs to be filled. There are pros and cons to hiring internally. One pro could be the employee already knows the company’s mission, policies, and work culture. The employee may even know how to fulfill some of the job duties listed in the job position looking to be filled. Another pro would be saving costs and time for sourcing externally, interviewing, and onboarding. You also may not have to pay the internal employee as much as you would an external employee.
If the firm only does external sourcing, there are chances the new hires could come in and change the direction of the company in a good way. One con of hiring externally could be the a longer hiring process. External candidates have to fill
out application, have interview, sometimes multiple interviews, get a background check done, sometimes drug screening, and onboarding. Internal candidates wouldn’t have to do anything but interview and onboarding.
It’s important for organizations to continue actively recruiting job candidates after some have applied because not all candidates that applied meet the company requirements. Another reason is not everyone that applied to the job will still be interested when it comes time for interviewing. Some people will have accepted other job offers or after further research decline to work at the organization. There’s also a likely chance a new hire may eventually resign so continuing to actively recruit job candidates is a  form of forecasting which is very beneficial.
“A recruiting source is effective if it helps a company meet its staffing goals for the position being filled. The firm’s staffing goals might include speed, cost, candidate, and new hire quality” (Phillips, 2023, p. 214). If the company is only using one option to source they aren’t doing everything they can to make sure the company’s staffing goals are met. This is because they’re only sourcing either internal or external candidates. Only sourcing external candidates could cause internal candidates who applied to the same job to resign or decrease productivity. Only sourcing internal candidates could cause managers to miss out on quality external candidates that can meet company goals.
