Analytical Bibliography Questions
Use the following criteria to evaluate an author’s study for your bibliography. Remember you must use an original research article; NOT a review article.
Summary (40 pts)
• Explain the problem (Introduction Section)
• Explain the theory or gap in the literature that led to the study (Introduction Section)
• State the purpose of the study? (Often located in the Introduction of the Article)
• State the general research questions and/or hypotheses (Maybe at the end of the Introduction or Methods Section).
• Explain the study design?
• Explain the critical variables in the study defined? (Methods Section)
• Explain the critical results of the study (i.e., main outcomes)?
Analysis/Critique (40 pts)
• Compare results with existing literature or predictions (Discussion Section)
• Did the authors address how the study resolved the problem (Discussion Section)
• Explain the author(s) limitations? (Discussion Section)
• Are major points cited to support points?
• Assess the references of the article and note the age of the references (within the past five years except for seminal works)?
• Assess the quality of the references. Are they peer-reviewed or secondary articles (e.g., websites, news articles, etc. )
Application (20 pts)
• Explain how the results are supportive or contradictory to prior research?
• Can the results be applied in a real-world context? If so, then how?
• Can this study offer opportunities for additional research? If so, then how?
