Review the following notes before completing this activity:
Revision and editing is often divided into three larger categories:
1. Global – The overall view of your essay. This level focuses on the entire essay to make sure you are addressing the needs of the assignment and are presenting it in a clear and organized way.
2. Local – The paragraph view of your essay. This level focuses on individual paragraphs to make sure they present the content within them clearly and effectively. Make sure your intro., body paragraphs, and conclusion are fulfilling their purposes.
3. Surface (editing) – The sentence view of your essay. This level focuses on individual sentences to make sure grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. are clear and accurate.
The levels may overlap, meaning sentences can affect paragraphs and paragraphs can affect the whole essay, but it helps to look at each level individually because it can help prioritize important things. The global level issues normally matter the most because your grammar, topic sentences, etc. may be perfect, but if they are not answering the requirements of the assignment, it doesn’t matter. Because of this, it’s best to start with the global level and work your way down.
Instructions:
1. Read through my notes on your rough draft provided through email.
2. Summarize my notes in three to four sentences.
3. Provide a list in which you explain what you need to do on the global, local, and surface levels of your essay based on the explanations of these concepts above (be specific and thorough with this part).
4. Provide a list of things you will revise and edit in your essay, and make this list in the order you will address the issues (you can be less thorough with this list, but make sure to put the most important revisions first).
5. In five to six sentences, explain why you chose this order to work on things (for example, if you note you will work on organization of two paragraphs before clarifying your thesis statement, explain why you decided this).
