3. Observations are backed up with quotes from the story.
4. Quotes are fully explained.
5. Journal contains very few grammatical, mechanical or fluency errors.

1. Comments on what may be puzzling or confusing about the setting.
2. Makes connections between student’s own life experience and the setting of the story.
