Evaluation Criteria:
1. Demonstrates a clear understanding of the element of symbol by choosing one or more objects in the story and making a connection between it/them and a central idea or ideas in the story.
2. Observations are detailed.
3. Observations are backed up with quotes from the story.
4. Quotes are explained fully.
5. Journal contains very few grammatical, mechanical or fluency errors.
Additionally, but not mandatory:
1. Comments on what may be puzzling or confusing about possible symbols and themes.
2. Makes connections between student’s own life experience and what happens in the story or the theme/symbols in the story.
