DISCUSSION POST- OTHER WORDS FOR HOME BY JASMINE WARGA
For this week’s discussion, choose ONE of the following prompts for response. Please indicate which prompt you’re responding to. Your response should be at least one paragraph.
1. Contrast Jude’s relationships with Layla, Sarah, and Miles. What do their actions toward her say about them? Be specific.
2. Look at the passage on pg. 82. Warga writes, “America, I realize, has its sad and tired parts too.” What do you think she means by that? We get this observation from Jude — in what way does her character, and her experience, add additional weight to this statement?
3. “Lucky” is a word Jude encounters in America: “I am learning how to say it/ over and over in English./ I am learning how it tastes— / sweet with promise/ and bitter with responsibility.” What do you think she means by this? Use specific details from the book to explain your response.
4. Why do you think Warga decided to tell Jude’s story in verse? How does this affect your reaction to the story? What do you think the author wanted you to understand about Jude and her family? Why couldn’t she tell you these things in ordinary prose?
