please start by watching this video on the Human Genome Project. When the Human Genome Project began in 1990, it was among the most ambitious medical research projects ever initiated in the history of the US. Its objective was none other than recording the billions of base pairs in human DNA in order to have ‘a map’ of the human genome. Every human being on this planet has unique DNA (which is why law enforcement uses genetic testing to identify victims or prosecute criminals). Although our DNA is unique, the Human Genome Project, which ended in 2006, created ‘a map’ of the entire human genome that we can now use to compare our DNA in search of patterns or particular traits.
Please answer the following questions:
How did the Human Genome Project advance our knowledge of human biology and evolution? Provide an example of from the videos and/or Chapter 2.
What contributions did the Human Genome Project make in the field of medicine? How might genetic testing improve our lives? Provide an example of from the videos and/or Chapter 2.
After learning about the Human Genome Project, please watch this short clip ‘Kyle Traded in his Lederhosen for a Kilt.’ Once you have watched this clip, answer the following questions:
Is identity tied to DNA? Why/why not?
If you were to take a DNA test and it revealed a genetic match to people in a region you have never visited nor ever really considered, how would this change your sense of who you are?
Is identity determined by what is in our DNA or is identity something separate and distinct?
Please provide at least one (1) quote per section from Chapters 1 and Chapter 2. Please remember to include the page numbers of where you have drawn this quote.
