As “Guidance for Essay #3” shows, you should choose your story first, and there are links to many different collections of fairy tales. Then, once you have your story and theorist’s ideas figured out, describe it in one paragraph. You may also include a title and thesis. To sum up, attach a document with the following information:
title of fairy tale(s) you will write about
title of collection and/or authors or translators
list or description of ideas from theorists (minimum of one theorist) being applied to the fairy tale
key words (to help you with your research)
examples of key words: women in fairy tales, monsters in fairy tales, absent parents
a draft of your essay’s title
a draft of your thesis statement
any other ideas you have
ESSAY 3 INSTRUCTIONS:
You will be writing a literary analysis essay, so follow the guidelines in the pdf, “How to Write Literary Analysis Essays” and the rubric for ENG 201 essays. For this essay, your main goal is to focus on a concept from one of the theorists we’ve discussed including: Vladimir Propp, Max Luthi, Bruno Bettelheim, and Clarissa Pinkola Estes. You will show where you see this concept(s) in a fairy tale of your choice. In addition, you will show that you did research on your topic by including quotations from that source. You may discuss more than one fairy tale to show a recurring pattern or theme.
Title: Include the title of the story and the focus of your essay.
Learning from Experience: “Little Red Riding Hood”
Tricksters in “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp”
The Wild Woman Archetype in “Rapunzel”
