Task
For this post, you will examine how the ideology of binary gender has impacted your life in some way.
You will write a 250-word post discussing how the ideology of binary gender, or cultural beliefs that there are only males/men and females/women and that these two groups are fundamentally different and opposites, has impacted your own experience as a gendered being. You may talk about any domain past, present, or future, including but not limited to individual identity and/or experiences with family and friends, school, work, government, and other social institutions.
The goal is to analyze how dominant gender ideologies have influenced your individual experience. Do not spend time defining binary gender. Show through your analysis of your own experience that you understand the concept.
IMPORTANT: You must explicitly use the following of concepts where appropriate: gender binary and ideology of binary gender. Place each term in bold when you use it the first time. Failure to explicitly name and use these concepts will result in a maximum 1.75 out of 2.5 points for that section of the assignment. Limit your definition of terms and focus on showing you understand the concepts through your analysis. Example: The dominant ideology of binary gender views women as naturally caring while men as seen as unsuited for care work.
Any citations for definitions of these terms must be from course texts, meaning the textbook or powerpoint. For course texts, indicate name of author and page number in parentheses at end of quote/sentence: (Wade and Ferree 125). For powerpoint, include my name and the class date: (Seeley 5/22). Use of outside materials to discuss course concepts where in class text is relevant will result in a loss of points; this loss of points will be particularly high if the outside information is incorrect.
You will then write two 100-word posts replying to a classmate. Your posts should help develop and deepen the insights of the original posters about the importance of dominant gender ideologies for individual experience. You should draw on knowledge from other sociology classes as well as course concepts and texts when applicable.
IMPORTANT: Your reply posts must substantively develop the original post in some significant way. Reply posts that simply (dis)agree with the original poster without adding something new to the conversation will receive a maximum of 1.5 out of 2 points for that portion of the assignment
