In this activity, you will do research on the minor party candidates running for office in 2024 and analyze their potential impact on the outcome of the election. You will then reflect on this potential impact, referring to the information you found in your research (scholarly sources and national newspapers only) as well as the readings for this module. Make sure to refer to Chapter 2 and the causes of the existence of the two-party system.
Section 1: Collect information
– Who are the candidates running for President who are not seeking the Democratic or Republican nomination? What ideologies or parties do they represent?
– Pick one of these candidates:
Are they present on the ballot in all states? In certain states?
Do they appear in national or state polls?
Which of the two traditional parties are they closest to, ideologically speaking?
Section 2: Analyze the information and connect to the readings (CHAPTERS 1-5 ONLY)
Focusing on that same candidate, what do you think could be the impact of their candidacy on the traditional candidates and on the outcome of the election? Make sure to bring up elements from the readings and address the voters they appeal to, the issues they focus on, the structure of the electoral system.
