This film analysis is an important assignment because it allows you to apply the principles and concepts that you have
learned in class: analyze your own reactions in order to understand your perceptions of the film; express yourself with
clarity, style, and effectiveness; and develop and use good standards of college level writing and analysis.
The superior film analysis is an expression of your thoughts and emotions. The superior film analysis is thoughtful,
honest, and careful. The superior film analysis is a well-composed, reasoned, and supported by course concepts.
There is no need to provide a film or plot summary – I have watched these films multiple times – any information that is
not your own (for example: information from an online website, MUST be cited using an APA citation) or it is considered
plagiarism.
Please follow guidelines for college-level writing; including a thesis statement, full paragraphs, transitions, introductory
and closing paragraphs..
Step #1- Watch a video from the list provided by your instructor
Your film choices include: “The Circle” (2017), “Home” (2015) animated, “Good Sam” (2019), “Unfrosted” (2024), “The Dig” (2021), “King Richard” (2021), “Candy Jar” (2018), “Adjustment Bureau” (2011), “Teenage Kraken” (2023) animated, “Race” (2016). you only need to pick one and ill let you pick
I think all (if not most of these films) are available on Netflix. But also check out Red Box, other streaming services and local libraries.
. Your chosen film to analyze – check out Netflix, Hulu, Redbox… for streaming/rental options.
Step #2- Write a 4-5 page (double-spaced) analysis paper that includes a minimum of one (1) concept from each of
these 6 areas:
1. Motivations (Chapter 3)
2. Verbal Messages (Chapter 4)
3. Listening (Chapter 5)
4. Nonverbal and Perception (Chapter 6)
5. Maintaining Relationships (Chapter 7)
6. Relationship Difficulties (Chapter 8)
Step #3- Analyze each examples from the film using the concepts presented in our textbook (making sure to apply at
least one example from each of the six required areas) using the following process:
1. Identify a scene/example from the film and briefly describe the scene.
2. Cite a text concept/theory that relates to this example – making sure to include the text definition and page
number or section/chapter from our text.
3. Analyze the film example and demonstrate your understanding of the text concept and how it relates to the film
scene including your own insights and thoughts.
Note: Please highlight the related course concept, definition and page number or chapter/section number in bold or a
different color.

Grading Rubric:
Superior
45-50 Assignment includes 10-12 clearly referenced scenes from the film and an analysis that applies 10-12 text
concepts (at least one concept from each of the six designated areas) from our text to the film scenes (including
definitions and page or chapter/section numbers). This analysis fully demonstrates understanding and the
ability to apply course knowledge and information. Is free of grammar or mechanical errors.
To help understand how this assignment relates to our overall course goals, completing this assignment
will allow you to demonstrate your mastery of the following course goals:
Course Goal #2 – Analyze the role of verbal and nonverbal communication in various interpersonal episodes and diverse
contexts.
Course Goal #4 – Identify perception barriers and apply appropriate perception checking skills.
