Assignment: Running an ANOVA Test
Unit Outcomes addressed in this assignment:
Apply statistics to a healthcare problem.
Formulate hypotheses based on a healthcare problem.
Complete an ANOVA test using statistical software.
Interpret ANOVA results.
Summarize the meaning of the results in a brief report.
Course Outcomes addressed in this assignment:
HS345-4: Analyze a dataset using a computerized statistical package for insight into a health-related problem.
GEL-1.02: Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard English.
Assignment Directions:
In the data collection discussion from Unit 1, collect the data that students provided for Variable 1, Variable 2, and Variable 3. Build an Excel file with two columns. Column 1 will be categorical data labeled “Group #” and will use the numbers 1, 2, and 3. Column 2 will be continuous data labeled “Score” and will use the values provided for Variable 1, Variable 2, and Variable 3.
Group 1 will use data from Variable 1. Group 2 will use data from Variable 2. Group 3 will use data from Variable 3. For example, in the introduction, if the student wrote Variable 1 = 289, Variable 2 = 297, and Variable 3 = 346, your Excel columns would look like this:
Continue adding all the values provided by the other students for Variables 1, 2, and 3. Be sure to group the variables together so that all values for Group 1 are together and all values for Group 2 are together, etc. Here is an example of what your completed Excel spreadsheet would look like, but with different data and fewer values than you will have:
As a mental health provider, you suspect that pairing new patients in your clinical practice with more experienced patients will help improve scores on their mental health assessments. To test your hypothesis, you develop an innovative mentoring program that has three groups. Group one will be the control and will consist of randomly selected participants receiving no intervention. Group two will be patients who meet in person weekly. Group three will be patients who regularly interact through social media and texting but never meet in person.
Analyze the scores in the data you collected with ANOVA using appropriate statistical software, such as PSPP or SPSS.
Evaluate your findings and make recommendations. Write a report that summarizes your conclusions. In the summary, include the relevant ANOVA test results as part of your narrative (not just in a table), your recommendation, and its justification.
