Audio recording in PowerPoint. This way you can avoid showing your face, should that make you more comfortable. Make sure we can see your cursor pointing things out as you talk, or be super specific in describing what you’re referring to in the artwork as you speak.
There is a section for the “final exam” module on your home page with a critical document called “visual analysis guide”. This guide outlines all the terms we learned this semester and is organized by category. Please let me know if you have questions about the assignment, as it is a large portion of your final course grades.
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeArtist Bio
Please briefly introduce your selected artist. Tell us where they were born, where is their art studio (or if deceased where they spent the majority of their art career), if they’re currently working or deceased, and what motivates or inspires this artist.
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeThe Art Medium
What is the art medium this artist works in? What method do they use? What implement do they use? What surface materials? How do they work in their studio?
Now that we have completed a deeper dive on the major art mediums, you will be able to elaborate on their creative practice more deeply (how they physically work in their studio). Please tell us more about their creative process and what materials they are using to both apply the medium and/or the surface materials they use to apply the medium onto. For example, if the artist is a printmaker, you now will be able to identify and go into detail on what specific method they’re using – woodcut, wood engraving, lithography, etc. If they are using ink or paint, and if they’re applying the pigment to paper, canvas, wood, metal, etc. If you say “painting” and that is all, you will receive 1 point for this section.
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeThe Art Category
Is this Realism, Expressionism, Abstraction or Non-objective art? You must also explain why, simply mentioning the category is not enough depth at this point in the semester.
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeThe Subject
What is the subject of this artwork? Remember to keep this part simple and to save all interpretive components for the “Content/Concept” section.
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeThe Visual Elements of Art
Please refer to the handout on the home page entitled “Visual Analysis” for this section. You are required to touch on all major categories: line, shape, value, color, texture, and space. Time and Motion as well, should it apply to your artwork specifically. From this list, you must select 12 terms to discuss. For example, you cannot say “my artwork consists of lines.” It must be in depth, such as “my artwork includes actual lines here + here (show me or explain where) and because they are diagonal in nature they imply a sense of high energy, movement and chaos. This section will be graded as 1 point per term. If all you do is list the term and do not explain it or point it out in the work, you will receive 0 points for that term. If you skip any of the noted required categories, I will deduct 2 points per missed category. Additionally, if your chosen artwork medium is video art or cinema-related, and you do not discuss time and motion, I will deduct a total of 4 points because both will always be cornerstone those mediums.
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeThe Principles of Design
Please refer to the handout on the home page entitled “Visual Analysis” for this section. Everyone is required to address these major categories: Unity, Focal Point, Balance, and Composition. If any of the other categories are important to your chosen artwork, you must also address those, otherwise you will risk 2 points per missed category. You must address a minimum of 9 terms with explanations and descriptions of where you’re seeing the terms represented in the artwork. If all you do is list the term and do not explain it or point it out in the work, you will receive 0 points for that term. If you skip any of the noted required categories, I will deduct 2 points per missed category.
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeContent/Concept
What are the ideas being expressed? What is the intellectual interpretation?
What cultural concepts are being expressed? Feminism? Racial identity? Gender identity? Sexuality?
Are there historical references?
Is there symbolism or iconography?
For example, if you choose non-objective art, and you say this is about nothing. You will receive 0 points. All art is about something.
