Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller is one of our required readings. The play itself was originally published in 1949. Since that time it has been performed countless times, and has been made into movies for both the cinema and television.
The story depicts the dilemma that Willy Loman, a salesman, confronts as he realizes the working environment into which he emerged as a young adult had been substantially transformed as he approaches retirement age; however, he is not financially in a position to retire.
Willy’s problems are also personal as his relationships with his wife and sons complicate his professional challenges. Notwithstanding Willy’s personal distress, his role as a salesman – i.e., an employee – is central to the play. In that context, this paper will require you to do the following:
Identify at least three issues that emerge in the play that speak directly to important issues that have been raised in this class;
Describe and explain how each issue affects Willy’s life;
Based on your work in this class, identify whether you believe Willy’s employer should have handled each issue differently, and if so how. You must give reasons for your assessments.
The paper must be at least 1000 but not more than 1500 words in length.
The reading is attached.
