Development of Self in Middle Childhood
Activity Description
You should select 1 child to help you with the activity. The child should be between 6 and 12 years of age. You should collect information about the child’s age (in years) and gender.You should also find out the family structure of the child (which family members live with him/her), level of education of parent(s), and social status of the family (high, middle, or lower classes). Also, include a description of the child’s personality from the perspective of a family member or friend. You may provide this description if you feel like you know the child well. Your paper should begin with this description of the participant.
Interview with child (Activity 1)
You will interview your child about their self-concept. Ask the child the following questions:
1. What are three words that describe you?
2. Who would you like to be when you grow up?
3. Are you like that now?
4. What is the name of your best friend?
5. Are you the same or different than your best friend?How are you the same or different?
6. What do you like to do when you are playing?
7. What are your favorite things?
8. Who is your favorite grown-up? Why are they your favorite?
Self-Interview (Activity 2)
Then, you should answer the questions from the interview for yourself. Include your answers in the report.
Self-portraits (Activity 3)
Bring paper and crayons/markers/colored pencils. Ask the child to draw a picture of him/herself. You should draw a picture of yourself at the same time. Ask the child to describe the picture (write down the child’s description). Scan or take a picture of the pictures and paste them both into your report.
When you type up your report of the activities you completed, make sure to include as many details as possible about the answers to the questions.
Summary of Activity:
Finally, in a summary paragraph at the end of this section: discuss the child’s attitudes toward interacting with you. Do you think the child is typical for his/her age on his/her beliefs about self? How are the child’s responses different than a typical adult’s responses (like you) to these questions? What factors are most important to a child’s development of self?
