Consider the following case study and then respond to the questions:
Box 4.2: Case Illustration: Experimental Use or Problematic Use?
My name is Carey. I don’t even know why the teacher asked me to come see a counselor. I don’t have much to say. The teacher just said you could talk with me about how things are going for me. I guess she got really mad when she saw me with a beer can this morning at the bus stop as she was driving in to school. It’s no big deal and it was really only my first sip I’d ever had. One of the other guys dared me to do it. So I did.
Now, imagine yourself as a helping professional in a substance use disorders counseling setting and consider these possible professional counseling responses to Carey to foster a caring and listening nonjudgmental response.
Possible counseling responses to begin the session:
Counselor: It seems you’re not clear why you’re here seeing me. Sounds like you are wondering if it might be somehow connected to your teacher being concerned when she saw you at the bus stop this morning with a beer.
Counselor: Having a beer in your hand at the bus stop this morning seems like no big deal for you as it was after a dare to drink it . . . yet, the concern from your teacher prompted her to ask you to meet with me.
Counselor: Coming in to meet with me today isn’t something you can see is needed since the beer you were holding came about after you were dared to drink it.
Counselor: It seems like I sense mixed reactions to you talking with me about having a beer at the bus stop.
Next, imagine yourself as a helping professional in a substance use disorders counseling setting and consider these possible professional counseling responses to Carey to foster a caring and listening nonjudgmental response.
Do you worry your counseling responses may be giving the client more permission to continue underage drinking? Why? Why not?
List at least three emotions that you experience when you read these counseling responses. Discuss how you imagine your feelings may influence your professional counseling responses while working with your client. What are the top two challenges? What are your top two indicators that your responses are helpful? (And gently remind yourself that there are no absolute right answers to these thought-provoking questions. Rather, these are designed to help foster greater self-awareness of what types of issues and feelings this work with an underage drinker might bring out in your work.)
Students are expected to have completed the reading assignment prior to the online discussion and use their knowledge to the topic requiring a comment. Answers are to be a minimum of 250-words of reflective and research material. Comments including only simple responses like “I agree” and “good point” is not considered satisfactory. Students are expected to reflect upon the reading material and provide substantive and thought- provoking responses that demonstrate higher-order thinking.
