For Writing Project 1, you will discuss at least two problems that exist where you work and
propose some solutions to the problems. You will draft a professional email to your supervisor using a
word processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word).
You could discuss any of the following potential employment problems: noisy work areas; an
understaffed department; poor scheduling of employees; an inferior or inflexible benefits package;
outdated equipment (such as laptops, tablets, or copiers); fellow employees wasting time on social media
during work hours; unfair distribution of workload; or the employer’s lack of involvement in the
community. This is not an exhaustive list; you may write about other problems that you have identified in
your workplace. In your email, make sure that you convince your supervisor that the identified problems
are legitimate areas of concern at your workplace.
Additionally, your email must identify at least one solution to each identified problem. For
example, you could explain how each proposed solution would be practical, workable, or cost effective
(or all three). You could also explain why productivity or employee morale would improve.
You should first organize your ideas into an outline. Next, you should compose an initial draft of
your email. Then, rewrite it and revise it. (Recall the 3×3 writing process). Remember to format your
email appropriately. You need to include “To,” “From,” “Date,” and “Re” lines. Remember to include an
effective subject matter in the “Re” line. The body of your message needs an introductory paragraph, at
least four paragraphs discussing the problems and solutions, and a closing paragraph. The body of your
message should be between 400 and 500 words. You will apply the concepts from the readings and quizzes from Week 1 and Week 2. In other
words, your email message should incorporate all the paragraph and writing techniques that you have
learned from the Evergreen and Business Communication textbooks, including having effective topic
sentences and using “expert” techniques.
In addition to those readings, you should review the handouts posted in the Week 2 module under
the heading “Handouts for Writing Project 1: Email Message.” Also, review the rubric within the
Dropbox folder for this writing project as you write your email.
Please follow these specific requirements when formatting your email:
• Set all four margins to 1.00 inch;
• Single space the sentences within each paragraph but double space between; paragraphs
(like this memo);
• Use 12-point type font; and
• Use left justification (not full or right justification).
