In this essay, you will reflect on your own personal expertise and what it reveals or illuminates about your identity.
Expertise is an important concept in the development and evaluation of arguments. When assessing the credibility, reliability, or integrity of a source, we must evaluate that source′s expertise. When doing so, it′s vitally important that we match the source′s specific expertise with the question at hand. For instance, your Ukrainian uncle might have more a more relevant position about the causes of the war in Ukraine than a medical doctor who′s never been there, even if your uncle never finished high school. On the other hand, a medical doctor might have a more relevant position on the cause of your back pain than your uncle does.
When considered in these relative terms, it becomes clear that everyone has expertise of some kind. You are a valid authority – perhaps the most valid authority – on at least some topic. Even though you are a student right now, there are likely several topics on which you could confidently teach a class.
Perhaps your expertise is in automotive engines. Perhaps it′s in fashion. Perhaps it′s in video games, or basketball, or local politics, or a specific film director, or cooking a particular kind of cuisine.
In this essay, you will choose one area of expertise and write about it from a personal angle. You can describe how you came to be an expert in that area (who taught you? why were you interested in the first place?) and explain what that particular topics means to you. How does your expertise fit into your identity?
This essay offers an opportunity to write vividly and desсrіptively, bringing your experience to life for your readers. You can describe specific moments and feelings and tell specific stories from your life. This essay also asks you to reflect on your lived experience, making meaning out of those moments and stories. After reading your essay, a reader should come away with an understanding of both where your expertise lies and why that expertise is significant to you.
I encourage to approach this essay creatively, giving yourself plenty of time to reflect and brainstorm. Below are several prompts or questions to help you get started. You definitely won′t want to tackle all of them in a 2-3 page paper, so once you′ve brainstormed fully, you′ll want to narrow and focus your paper. You may also find an angle that is different than any I′ve suggested here.

Brainstorming Questions:
What is the thing you know most about? Think broadly here. This may not be an academic subject, or even a popular subject. Perhaps you know a lot about termites for some reason, or toenail fungus, or Magic the Gathering cards. Try to make a list of a few topics about which you′re an expert.
How did you come to be an expert in those topics? Did you have a teacher or mentor?
What is it about your topic(s) that you find interesting? Why are you passionate about it?
In what ways does your expertise come in useful? What benefit, if any, do you get from it?
Can you think of a specific story or two that demonstrates your expertise? This could be a story from your learning process, or a time you were called upon to demonstrate your expertise.
Have you ever been made to doubt your expertise, or to feel that it isn′t valid? How so, and how did you respond?
