In this first unit, we have
explored/reviewed the basic elements that go into storytelling, as well
read two post-apocalyptic short stories:“Speech Sounds” by Octavia Butler (link) AND “Jaguar’s Breath” by Luis J. Rodriguez (link).
Your Job:
In 3-5 double spaced pages analyze the stories in the following way:
Compare and contrast both short stories around ONE specific theme (lesson, idea, etc.) that you have identified. How
do the authors’ approaches to this theme differ, and what unique
perspectives do they offer? How does each story’s portrayal of the theme
contribute to its overall message or meaning?
Keys for success:
Your essay should be organized,
beginning with an intro and thesis statement that sets up and leads
directly to your points, and ultimately your conclusion. In the
following pages, I have posted a review of the entire writing process.
Directly quote from both stories to
support the points you make about theme/meaning. A rule of thumb is to
have at least one quote for every body paragraph or point you make.
Focus primarily on your own opinions
with regard to the shared theme of the stories, using the readings to
support your interpretation/argument.
I do not want a summary of the story. If you hand me just a summary, then you will need to revise the paper.
You do not need any outside sources for this essay. I want to know how YOU, the reader, are responding to these stories.
Our guiding principle for
this essay is Reader Response Criticism. There are no wrong
interpretations as long as you can show examples from the story in the
forms of quotes, as well as explain. For more information on reader response, click this link.
Please use MLA format, including for
all quotes you use from the story. You do not need a works cited page
unless you decide to use an outside source for some reason, but again,
that is not necessary or even recommended.
