Flannery O’connor: “Everything that Rises Must Converge”
James Joyce: “Araby”
1. Examine the references to eyes, sight, and so on, in “Everything That Rises.” What do these references reveal about Julian’s perspective through most of the story? At the end of the story?
2.In “Everything that Rises,” does Mrs. Chestny’s encounter with violence prepare her “to accept her moment of grace”? Or is Mrs. Chestny simply doomed because of her bigotry? You may use O’Connor’s essays and letters selections in your response as another primary source, if desired.
3.Write an essay comparing and contrasting O’Connor’s and Joyce’s use of characterization, setting, or symbolism in “Everything that Rises Must Converge” and “Araby.”

Utilize 1-2 secondary literary scholarly source(s).  
Must contain two (2) direct quotes, summaries or paraphrases from each primary source. 
Must contain two (2) direct quotes, summaries or paraphrases from your secondary source(s). 
Quotations must be no longer than 2-3 lines.
