PLEASE RESPOND TO BELOW CLASSMATE DISCUSSION:
I agree with the assertion “Despite having become an insect, Gregor is more humane and sensitive than his family.”  Gregor’s compassion shines through in Franz Kafka’s, “The Metamorphosis,” as he continues to worry about his family’s welfare despite his own terrifying physical transformations. He exhibits a strong sense of empathy and accountability by being concerned about the financial strain his illness places on his parents and sister. On the other hand, his family’s initial disbelief quickly gives way to contempt and abandonment. Instead of making an effort to comprehend or assist Gregor, his father responds angrily, hurting him. Overwhelmed by the circumstances, his mother shies away from him out of disgust and terror. The most notable change in Gregor is probably in his sister Grete, who at first shows some sympathy but ultimately takes the lead in calling for Gregor to be removed from the household since she sees him as nothing more than a bothersome bug. A tragic irony is highlighted by Gregor’s persistent caring for his family’s needs in spite of his own misery and their growing rejection of him, the insect yet possesses more human traits than those who are still physically human.
