Inter-professional Collaboration with Informaticists
Professional collaboration between health informaticists
and other health workers is essential in ensuring the goal of quality,
effective, and seamless healthcare service delivery. From experience, a
clear understanding of each specialist’s role in the organization is key
to achieving proper inter-professional collaboration in service
delivery. For instance, the health informaticist relies on information
from nurses, doctors, lab technicians, and other specialists. Using
information from all the professionals in the hospital, he or she can
design a system of information exchange, data collection, storage and
analysis, and data-driven decisions among the facility administrators
(van Hulzen et al., 2022). They collaborate to collect and utilize
biomedical data, information, and knowledge for the improvement of
service delivery and facilitate problem-solving in different health
departments.
The main approach to enhance collaboration between
informaticists and other healthcare professionals involves encouraging
inter-professional teamwork within the organization. In achieving this
approach, clear responsibilities have to be created and a culture of
collaboration and consultation has to be encouraged through effective
collaborative systems, policies, and processes, especially involving
data collection, analysis, and utilization. Importantly, there has to be
a clear communication system, facilitate multidisciplinary rounds, and
empower inter-professional respect (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022).
With a clear understanding of the benefits of such collaborations and
why an organization needs to rely on data in offering healthcare
services or designing nursing care programs, it becomes easier to
incorporate the role of informaticists and data specialists in the care
provision.
Nursing informatics is paramount in improving data handling
in an organization. This perspective introduces new dynamics in data
management and the role of other professionals in utilizing data and
data analytics outcomes for their service delivery. Nursing informatics
improves the way care is provided by improving the quality of patient
care and making it more effective and efficient (Karp et al., 2019).
Based on this perspective, nurses in the future shall be expected to
understand and appreciate the role of data and informatics in service
delivery. By doing this, they enhance patient care outcomes and compel
nurses to collect as accurate and reliable data as possible to
facilitate the improvement of nursing care programs.
In summary, inter-professional collaboration, especially
with nursing informaticists is crucial in enhancing data handling and
improving evidence-based care. It should be encouraged and enhanced for
effective decisions regarding nursing care such as enhancing patient
safety, quality of healthcare, and efficiency in service delivery. In
this regard, such collaborations should be enhanced to improve the
collection, storage, analysis, and application of data and resulting
knowledge. This will significantly make the nursing profession reliant
on not only data but also supporting technology and digital platforms.
