QL Research
Students will complete an APA-7th edition-Manual formatted paper with NO minimum pages of content. The paper must be in English and will address in detail qualitative (QL) research conducted on a U.S. vulnerable population (Examples: children, youth, seniors/older adults, members of LGBTQ groups, communities of color, veterans, immigrants, refugees/asylees) OR an issue/social concern or problem of interest to the social work profession in the United States (Examples: poverty, child welfare, child abuse/neglect, elder abuse, elder abuse/neglect, homelessness, domestic/family violence, immigration policy, mental health/illness, discrimination, sexism, racism, ageism, homophobia, xenophobia.)—for a more comprehensive list of populations/vulnerable groups see the NASW Code of Ethics AND Social Work Speaks. The chosen population or issue/social concern or problem will be focus of this detailed qualitative (QL) research analysis paper.
A suggested outline (bosquejo) for this paper is:
One or two introductory paragraphs summarizing the content of the paper, including which chosen population or issue/social concern or problem will be researched through qualitative studies;
One or two paragraphs defining the main purpose or purposes of said research/studies (Description, Explanation, Prediction, Discovery Or a mix–See Holosko, 2006, p. 53, Box 26);
One paragraph discussing the natural setting or environment in which the research/study took place and/or if the data was collected with any or few controls (Holosko, 2006, p. 52, Box 25)
Whether or not the shared experiences of both the subjects and the researchers are part of the study, if there are different observations and interactions with the setting, and if the researcher is a true participant in the study (Holosko, 2006, p. 52, Box 25)
How the data was collected, namely, what were the basic qualitative (QL) collection strategies (Observation, Reading/Reviewing, Interviewing, and or listening Or a mix)-See Holosko, 2006, pp. 54-55, Box 28;);
What was or were the qualitative (QL) research methods used to conduct the study (or studies): Phenomenology, Narration, Case Study, Ethnography, Action/Participatory Research, Participant Observation, Grounded Theory, and/or Practice/Program Evaluations Or a mix AND the qualitative (QL) research techniques-See Holosko, 2006, pp. 58-61, Figure 34/Box 32 AND Figure 35/Box 33)— Use TABLE 4: Assessing the QL Technique and Main Methods of the Study, on page 62; and
Identify the section(s) of the NASW Code of Ethics that could relate to the population or issue/social concern or problem and why.
Requirements:
1 = Cover page;
NO PAGE MINIMUM FOR CONTENT (Body or the paper); and
1 or 2 = Reference page(s) with a minimum of five (5) references—or more. The five (5) or more references MUST include resources discussed in class (e.g., Holosko, Rubin and Babbie, the NASW Code of Ethics, the research studies you read/reviewed/analyzed/critiqued).
