Read the following journal article in GALILEO: Meyer, Joseph M. “Henry’s Quest for Narrative in The Red Badge of Courage.” Midwest Quarterly, vol. 59, no. 1, Sept. 2017, pp. 23–38.
Write a review of this article utilizing the following prompts, but do not list them as questions in your response: What is your overall opinion of Meyer’s thesis? What do you find most interesting or convincing from the piece? What did you find least convincing? How does it inform your reading of Crane’s novel so far? Can you think of additional examples from other movies or television programs you have watched or stories you have read? How can you relate this information to your own life or experiences?
Once you have organized your ideas under a central thesis, you should structure your response with an introduction providing historical context, a minimum of two body paragraphs with topic sentences that support your overall thesis with quotation and citation from both the primary and secondary source, and a conclusion that restates your main points.
Maintain 3rd person POV (he, she, it, they) throughout the essay to establish a formal tone. Use the present tense when discussing texts and sources (except for biographical or historical context).
Length: Minimum 1,000 words (not including Works Cited word count). Submissions under 1,000 words will be penalized.
Format: MLA 9th Edition with Works Cited page, MLA in-text citation, and MLA bibliographic citation with hanging indentation.
Include at least four quotations from the article and four from the novel with accompanying in-text citation. Additional paraphrase or summary from the article may be included, but make sure to cite in all cases.
