The authors introduce Power as a “Moderator” variable in this study. For clarification, a moderator is a third variable that affects the strength of a relationship between two other related variables. For example, if A has a direct effect on B, the introduction of a moderator (C) variable, will affect the strength of that A-B relationship. That effect may make a positive relationship stronger, weaker, or reverse the relationship such that a previously positive relationship is now negative. The authors introduce French & Raven’s 5 power bases as moderators in the motivation-performance relationship. Many leaders/managers thinks there is a direct relationship between motivation and performance and rely on their legitimate position to influence subordinates.
