The purpose of the informative speech assignment is to provide the audience with new
information or a new perspective relating to your chosen topic. This speech will utilize the
informative strategies of definition, descriiption, explanation, and/or comparison to communicate
knowledge to the audience. What makes this speech different from a demonstrative speech is
that this speech answers the questions of “what” or “why” and a demonstrative speech answers
the question of “how.”
For example, in a demonstrative speech you may show how to perform CPR. In an informative
speech you might discuss Dr. Peter Safar, the creator of CPR, or the newest advances in CPR
equipment and technology.
Learning Objectives
After completing the informative speech, students should be able to:
 Learn the fundamentals of speech preparation including audience assessment, topic
choice, organization, and the use of supporting materials
 Learn the fundamentals of researched informative speeches
 Comprehend the impact of relevance within public speaking and how it shapes speech
development and delivery
 Learn the fundamental components of effective speech introductions and conclusions
and then formulate each within a given speech
 Create and incorporate effective visual aids in an oral presentation
 Demonstrate effective delivery techniques using good vocal skills, such as voice and
articulation, verbal skills, such as vocabulary and use of imagery, and nonverbal skills,
such as gesture and eye contact
Your Task
You must prepare and deliver a 5 to 6 minute informative speech on a topic of your choice. You
will be allowed a 30 second over/under on this speech. Any speeches under 4:30 and over 6:31
will lose points (see rubric for details).
You may choose a topic on any of the following: a person, concept, event, object or technology.
However, I must approve your topic before you are allowed to speak.
Remember that a good informative speech focuses on information that is new and relevant to
the audience; avoid topics that the audience already widely understands. Refer to the attached
rubric for the components that should be included in the speech.
 The speech should be 5-6 minutes long. You will have a 30-second grace period on each
side in order to scan your audience with the camera before and after your speech.
 Look at the Rubric for details on deductions!
 Your speech outline should follow the structure and requirements as shown on the
Informative Outline Template document. Late outlines will not receive credit.
 All speeches should have at least one visual aid to help illustrate speech points.
 Your presentation should have three parts – an introduction, body and conclusion.
o Concisely introduce your topic beginning with an effective attention getter, provide a
clear thesis statement, motivate your audience to listen, preview the main points, and
establish credibility.
o For the body of your speech you should have 2-3 main points and be logically
organized, use transitions and incorporate quality supportive evidence that provides
adequate explanation for the audience members.

 Support your content verbally with accurate and relevant evidence from at least 3
different credible, peer-reviewed sources. Books, periodicals, journals, etc. work well to

Additional Requirements
 Presentation Aids: You are to use at least one presentation aid in this speech. This
should be either ONE photo (hand shown or on a static power-point) or another type of
visual aid.
 Research: You are to verbally cite a minimum of three different credible print sources in
this speech. Sources should also be cited in the text of your outline and in the reference
list of your outline.
 Outline: You are to turn in a detailed outline of your speech
