Write a draft (700-900 words) with a thesis statement and argument backed up with evidence from the primary source, Friedrich Engels’ Draft of a Communist Confession of FaithLinks to an external site. (1847). Your paper will be a response to ALL of the following questions, with your answer to the first one serving as your thesis statement:
According to Engels’s confession, what were the central goals of the communists, and how did they aim to achieve them?
How does Engels define the proletariat, and what sets it apart from other types of workers?
How does Engels’s confession explicitly link communist ideology to industrialization? What place did revolution have in this ideology?
Citing Evidence: It is important for you to ground your argument in evidence from the primary source. Incorporate the source material into your own writing by paraphrasing or quoting.
Because your references should be confined to class readings, you may use parenthetical citation, rather than the Chicago style citation historians prefer. That is, cite as follows: (Engels). Make sure to include a full bibliographical citation at the end of your paper. I discourage you from using sources beyond this one. Instead, concentrate on writing a good argument.
Grading Criteria: In this paper, I will be looking especially for:
A clear thesis statement that answers the first question and makes one argument.
Evidence from the source that is carefully chosen to best support your argument and that comes from throughout the text.
Good paragraph structure with topic sentences, evidence, and conclusions in each paragraph.
