Your goal in this essay is to do an analysis of your selected story. Your paper should cover these six different points, and setting up your paper to follow this structure will help keep you on point.
1) Begin your analysis by identifying your selected story and considering your own reaction to the story: What do you bring to this story that makes it uniquely and personally important to you?
2) Then look at the plot: What do you think is the major conflict and why? Where do you think the climax of the story is and why?
3) Identify the setting of the story: When and where does it take place, and how is the setting important to the plot and characters? Where are points of setting acting as more than just a backdrop?
4) Analyze the main character(s) in the story: What determinations can you make about the character(s) and based on what? How is the characterization revealed?
5) What elements of style strike you?
6) What, ultimately, do you see as the story’s theme or message? (And, yes, you can certainly use what you posted for this week’s discussion forum, if applicable.)
For every area that you explore, use textual details from the story for additional support. This means use actual lines from the story to support your point, and be sure to put quotes around material that comes directly from the story. Put the page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence containing textual references.
Do not use any outside source material. This is your analysis.
See page 6 of the syllabus about the required heading, header, and formatting.
Do not use 2nd person, “you.” Proofread and edit your essay before submission. Remember writing tutors are an awesome resource and you get extra credit!
Your paper should be a minimum of 750 words, but a thorough analysis will require students to exceed that word count in order to fully develop each of the prompts.
